The first session of the SBS Lift Seminar 2020 on the current revision of lift standards within CEN/TC10 took place on Tuesday, 3rd November. After the opening speeches by the President of EFESME, Mr Massimo Bezzi, and the President of SBS - Small Business Standards, Ms Gunilla Almgren, the event entered its dialogue phase with the presentation by Mr Esfandiar Gharibaan, the CEN/TC Chairman. Mr Gharibaan, drawing on his many years of experience in standardisation and the lift industry, explained how work is progressing on the revision of the EN81 series standards.

In dialogue with Mr Gharibaan was Mr Luciano Faletto, EFESME Secretary General and technical expert in many working groups, including ISO TC178 - Lifts, escalators and moving walks. The great experience of both speakers allowed to create a lively and interesting dialogue, often enriched by questions from the audience, which allowed to explain in detail how the revision of the EN81 series is developing, and what to expect from the next steps. But this was not all that was discussed: other very interesting topics, such as the consequences of the James Elliot case, the importance of having harmonised standards as well as the participation of SMEs in standardisation processes at all levels were among the topics touched on by an always interesting and engaging conversation. The public was no exception, with both very technical questions about the standards being revised, and more actual and topics ones, such as the consequences of the forthcoming Brexit on the use of standards.
