The conference “Standardization activity for SMEs: from Europe to ISO” held in Brussels on 12 May has been a successful event and produced an overall positive outcome. Several representatives of the European institutions took actively part to the meeting and stimulated an interesting exchange of ideas during the debate. EFESME’s President, Mr. Georges, stressed the need to “safeguard the interests of SMEs, which represent around 98% of European companies”. Moreover, he emphasized “the importance of being present and active in Brussels, because 75-80% of the legislation approved at EU level directly falls on Member States at national level”. Mr. Georges finally recalled that “the impact assessment has to be a priority of the EU activity. Mr. Andrea Benassi, General Secretary of UEAPME, reaffirmed the existence of several shared interests between UEAPME and EFESME and highlighted the crucial role played by sector policies, stressing that the standardization process should be taken into account at all policy levels. The conference achieved a significant result by obtaining the commitment of the representatives of the European Economic and Social Committee, Mr. Cappellini, Mr. van Iersel and Mr. Boyle, to take into account the needs expressed by our Federation. Furthermore, Mrs. Pich, policy officer of the European Commission – DG Enterprise and Industry, underlined the key role EFESME plays as “indispensable forum for a properly balanced dialogue with the European institutions” and recalled that EU institutions are supporting SMEs. During the second Panel, the discussion focused on the standardization activity with the interventions of representatives of two European standardization organizations, Mrs. Iffour of NORMAPME and Mr. Michaud of CEN/CENELEC, and of the Chairman of the International Standardization Organization Technical Committee 178, Mr. de Mas Latrie.
